CMU's Research Impact Service
The University Libraries provides research metrics support to CMU students, researchers, and staff. Research metrics is the measurement of the impact of published research based on various metrics. Research metrics support includes analyses of your work's overall impact, analysis of your department's research impact, track your research work in social media, enhance the visibility of your research, and citation mapping.
Research metrics are measurements used to capture the impact of a research. These metrics capture quantitative data at the article, journal and author level. Tools used to capture this information include citation counts, h-index, and journal impact factor.
Knowing the impact of their research can be helpful to the researcher in many ways: to support applications for tenure or promotion; show broad impact for grants and other funding application; quantify, and learn how their research is being used; identify other researchers that are citing their work and identify potential collaborators. There is no one measurement or number that can perfectly capture the impact of a project or author, so it is important to consider the various methods and measurements together.
