Open Science Program: Open Science Activities & Research

Research or Activities

What's our library doing?

1. Open Science Educational Research

Chasz Griego, Lauren Herckis, and Lencia Beltran were awarded a two-year Simon Initiative Seed grant to conduct preliminary research to identify opportunities to maximize impact on student learning outcomes and integrate an innovative technology-enhanced learning tool, an open science recommendation system, into existing systems of practice at CMU. Ultimately, we aim to identify students, faculty, staff, and other members of the academic community at CMU whose learning will be positively impacted by engagement with open science resources. This innovative approach to transforming educational experiences at Carnegie Mellon will maximize the impact of open science-enabled pedagogies on learning outcomes and make a novel contribution to postsecondary education. The resulting tool will serve as a proof of concept for other universities.

2. Assessing the impact of an Open Science program

In 2022, Huajin Wang, Melanie Gainey, Patrick Campbell, Katie Behrman, and Sarah Young published a case study in F1000Research (https://doi.org/10.12688/f1000research.110355.2) about the creation of an end-to-end open science program at Carnegie Mellon University Libraries. The paper describes using quantitative user data to assess usage of services and their impact.
