Thesis and Dissertation Submission

Thesis and Dissertation Submission Through the University Libraries

In accordance with Carnegie Mellon’s Student Handbook, most graduate students are required to submit copies of their theses and dissertations to the University Libraries. This requirement serves to preserve, showcase, and disseminate the unique, original research produced by CMU scholars.

The Libraries ensures the broad accessibility and long-term preservation of this work through two primary platforms:

  • ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Global: a major commercial database serving as a global catalog of dissertations from thousands of institutions.
  • KiltHub:  the University's official, free, open-access institutional repository, providing access to CMU research to anyone, anywhere, at no cost.

Carnegie Mellon dissertations and some master's theses will be deposited into the ProQuest Dissertation and Theses database and indexed through their systems, and will also be automatically uploaded into the KiltHub repository where they will be freely available open access.

UPDATED THESIS SUBMISSION PROCESS TO THE LIBRARIES

The University Libraries is transitioning to a new thesis submission process for the 2025-26 academic year.  Theses and dissertations will be submitted to the Libraries though individual college ProQuest ETD Administrator dashboards and automatically deposited into the KiltHub institutional repository. Each school and college is on its own timeline for adapting to the new workflow, but all theses will be deposited through ProQuest by the end of the academic year.

Graduate students completing theses and dissertations during the 2025-26 academic year should contact their department's graduate coordinators for more information on their workflow.
