Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between KiltHub and ProQuest?

KiltHub is a figshare-based open access repository of Carnegie Mellon research managed by the CMU Libraries. ProQuest Dissertations and Theses is a commercial database of theses from institutions from around the world. KiltHub provides a platform for free open access of a thesis or dissertation, while ProQuest provides subscription access to its content. Authors can collect royalties from closed access publishing in ProQuest. Both platforms allow for embargoes and are crawled by Google Scholar and other search engines.

Do I need to obtain copyright permissions?

If you have used copyrighted material belonging to others in your work, you must credit the author and publisher in all cases. If the use of the material is not clearly Fair Use under US Copyright Law, you must also obtain permission from the author for reuse.

I submitted my thesis, why am I not seeing it in ProQuest or KiltHub?

Your thesis submission must be approved by your graduate school before the coordinator sends it to ProQuest for publishing. Once ProQuest receives the manuscript, it can take 4-6 weeks before it is available in their database. Theses are not uploaded to KiltHub until after their ProQuest publication. If you've chosen an embargo, your dissertation or thesis file will become available when the embargo period you specified has passed.

How do I get a physical copy of my dissertation?

When publishing your thesis or dissertation through ProQuest Dissertations, you can order bound printed copies as part of the submission process.  Alternatively, you can upload a digital copy of your manuscript and order bound copies through CMU's Office of Tartan Ink, which is located in the Cohon University Center, or any other printing and binding resource.
