Department updates/reminders:
-Welcome back, Charlotte!
--Andrew is now located in 105C behind the circulation desk.
-We will be closed for Juneteenth on June 19th.
Pre-College Reminders:
Pre-College students will begin arriving on June 19th, and all programs will end on August 2nd. Students can use our Libraries to check out items, and allocations can be found here. For any questions regarding circulation for Pre-College, please see Amy. Similar to previous years, there will be a display of browsable monologues and plays for the Pre-College Drama students. This year, the display will be located on the 4th floor on the Frew Street side of the building, adjacent to the seating area.
Student Staffing Updates:
Six new student employees were trained as Circulation Assistants in the month of May. We are so glad to have Kwame (Sorrells) and Frances. Angel, Violet, Moyo, and Christina (Hunt) this summer. So far, they have all been doing an awesome job, and so have our two returning students, Kevin (Hunt) and Hailey (Sorrells). In addition to their regular circulation duties, this summer, our student employees will be working on shelf reading, weeding assistance, participating in display curation, and working on the Picture File on the 4th floor.
Speaking of the Picture File: If you haven't seen it for yourself yet, the Picture File is a filing cabinet located on the 4th floor that contains clippings of old magazines, books, and dust jackets. The purpose of the Picture File is to provide materials to students/patrons for art and design projects. Pictures are clipped up and placed in categorized files in the top drawer by Student Circulation Assistants and Stacks Assistants. This idea was brought to our department by Arts Librarian Jill Chisnell last fall, and we have been curating it since! Anyone can use the Picture File, as long as they are respectful and mindful that it is a shared resource.
Tales from behind the Circulation Desk
On a quiet Sunday afternoon in Hunt, one of our student employees, Kevin, received a strange call: a prank call from a child pretending to be a parent looking for "Diary of a Wimpy Kid". Perhaps they meant to call the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh? Whether this caller was serious or not, the interaction was certainly a memorable one!
Weeding Updates:
- 7,200 books were pulled from OVRSZQ-4 and discarded, sent to BWB for resale.
- 3,540 books were pulled from OVRSZQ-4 and transferred to offsite.
- Per recommendation from the Hunt Relocation Subcommittee, all of the OVRSZQ-4 books with call numbers
starting with “A through L” (255 items) and “P through Z” (1863 items) were moved to OVRSZQ-3.
- The only OVRSZQ-4 books that will remain on HL4 will be books with call numbers beginning with “M”
(Music) and “N” (Fine Arts).
- The 2 temps (Andy & Josh) finished their assignment on May 23; they are now working full time as Facilities
Assistants in IDeATe. Three student employees are working part-time on weeding projects.
That's all for now. Happy Rainbow Book Month!
