Publishing

There are several factors to consider before submitting your research for publication.

  • Choose the format appropriate for your area of research (article, book chapter, book, conference paper, or other).
  • Think carefully about which publisher and publication are best suited to your research and intended audience. Evaluate their quality and reputation.

Publishing an article

  • For journals in your field, search SCImago database. Avoid predatory publishers.
  • Major academic publishers also have suggestion tools to help you find a relevant journal based on your abstract or key words:
  • Review the journal's publication model (open access vs. subscription), and check what pathway you want to follow.
  • Publishing open access (OA) increases access to research, visibility, and potential for collaboration. For a list of OA journals, check DOAJ.
  • Note that OA journals require authors to pay an article processing charge (APC). Some will be No Cost to you due to library transformative agreements, and some will ask for APC. Search Journal Eligibility for information:
    •   means the library covers the fee if you are a corresponding author
    •   means you should apply for funding.
  • Carefully follow the instructions to authors provided by the publisher or publication.
  • For OA articles you will retain the copyright but will be asked to choose a CC license for your work.

Book a consultation with a librarian to review journals you have chosen or APC coverage support for OA publishing.

Metrics

Metrics are just one way to assess academic performance. The traditional metrics are widely used, though they have limits and recommended to be used alongside other impact indicators.

Check that your profiles are up-to-date:

What to do:

  • Search for yourself on these platforms
  • Merge duplicate profiles, if any
  • Check that only your publications are listed
  • Add any missing publications to your profiles
  • Link your ORCID to all your profiles
  • Update Elements profile

Promoting Research

Your article will only get cited when it can be discovered by other researchers. There are many ways to promote your research, making it visible to research communities:
