Archiving Student Organizations

This guide will assist CMU Student Organizations in collecting, organizing, and archiving their records.

DONATING YOUR RECORDS TO THE UNIVERSITY ARCHIVE

NOT READY TO PART WITH YOUR STUFF?

That's OK! There are ways you can still contribute without donating your physical records.

"Post-custodialism" is a new practice in archives. Through digitization (using flatbed scanners, dslr cameras, etc.) you can make high quality digital copies of your records. These digital copies or "surrogates" can then be donated to the University Archive, while the original physical records stays with you or your organization.

Digitization has specific best standards and requires special equipment like flatbed scanners and DSLR cameras. Contact the Community Collections Processing Archivist to discuss how you can digitize your records using equipment available in the Hunt Library.
